Introduction to Drawing Freehand Mandalas

The mandala represents the universe in the Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Each mandala starts with a seed, and a mandala is not drawn or painted; rather, it is “grown.” Each one grows organically, and is absolutely unique.

In this workshop, you’ll learn the techniques for drawing freehand mandalas, including basic motifs, the underlying geometry, and techniques for consistent mark-making. We’ll start from simple, basic concepts and use a few rudimentary aids to solidify your technique; then build on each level until you are comfortable drawing mandalas without using tools or measurements. As soon as you let go of the stress, the need for perfection, drawing mandalas becomes a highly meditative, extremely rewarding art practice.

Watercolor Batik Technique

Traditional Batik is a technique of wax-resist dyeing of cloth, originating from Indonesia. I’ve adopted- and adapted- this technique for watercolor painting on paper. In this workshop, you’ll be provided with the tools and materials to create your own watercolor batik artwork. You’ll learn how to most effectively use masking fluid (a latex resist) to create your designs and use washes of transparent watercolor for a layered, 3-dimensional effect.
